Sound Connections: Makassar Workshop

The Makassar Workshop marks the next stage of Tura's Sound Connections, a multi-year program exploring the cultural and musical relationships between northern Australia, Indonesia and the wider Indo-Pacific region.

For hundreds of years before colonisation, traders from North travelled on the waters between the islands of Indonesia and the coastline of Northern and North-Western Australia in search of the sea’s rich bounty of trepang (sea cucumber). Along with trading of goods, these sea-farers participated in a rich exchange of language, culture, and knowledge with First Nations communities along the coastline – fragments of which still remain in archeological sites and with key families on both sides of the water. All of this was abruptly halted in the mid twentieth century, when the hard borders of nation states were introduced.

Continuing the artistic dialogue

This chapter of Sound Connections further explores these long standing pre-colonial relationships as a jumping off point to ask – what were the cultural and musical links that existed many generations ago, and what is an imagined future for these musical connections between artists today?

The Makassar Workshop extends these relationships into South Sulawesi, building on the Kimberley Indonesia Project (2018–2019) and Kai Jawa (2025), which brought First Nations Australian and Indonesian artists together through collaborative music-making, performance and cultural exchange.

Miriwoong songman Chris Griffiths and Papuan composer and singer Septina Layan will be joined by new collaborators: acclaimed Indonesian filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist Garin Nugroho, Noongar and Kungarakan artist Ilona McGuire, and Makassar-based cultural producer and artist Abdi Karya. Together, they bring distinct cultural perspectives and artistic practices to a new phase of shared exploration.
