Kimberley Song Muster
Strengthening First Languages in the Kimberley through Song
The Language Song Muster builds on Tura’s Sound FX program, a long-running initiative that has supported community music-making in the Kimberley since 2017. This next phase extends that work, deepening long-term engagement while opening new pathways for collaboration across the region.
As the project evolves, activity will extend beyond the Fitzroy Valley into other parts of the Kimberley. These creative engagements will involve time on Country, songwriting workshops, and opportunities for recording and performance, shaped in partnership with local communities.
Song plays an important role in strengthening language, culture, and community. Through creating and sharing music, participants build confidence in language use, connect across generations and contribute to the ongoing transmission of cultural knowledge. The Kimberley Song Muster supports a growing culture of language singing across the region, where songs are created, remembered, and shared.
Ongoing Engagements
At the core of the Kimberley Song Muster are a series of creative engagements across the Kimberley, bringing together songwriters, language educators, musicians and community members.
Each engagement creates space for collaborative songwriting, recording, and cultural exchange. Activities may include workshops, informal music-making, and time spent connecting with place and language, supporting participants to develop songs grounded in local knowledge and stories.
Night Space, Fitzroy Crossing
As part of the Kimberley Song Muster, Tura is working in partnership with Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal Corporation through its Night Space program in Fitzroy Crossing.
From Wednesday 22 to Friday 24 April, and Monday 27 to Tuesday 28 April, Tura will be on site delivering evening sessions for young people aged 10–17, creating space for music-making, songwriting and shared creative activity.
These sessions form part of the program’s broader focus on working with young people, supporting creative expression and strengthening connections to language, culture and community.
