Tura is progressing the next phase of its long-running Sound FX program through the Kimberley Song Muster.
Building on nearly a decade of work in the Fitzroy Valley, the Kimberley Song Muster supports the creation and sharing of songs in First Languages. This work is expanding across the region, including exploratory engagement in areas such as Derby and Bidyadanga, while maintaining a focus on long-term relationships, listening and consultation.
The current residency in Fitzroy Crossing includes workshops with community songwriters and planned activity with young people through the Night Space program, delivered in partnership with Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal Corporation. These evening sessions are intended to work with young people aged 10–17, creating space for music-making, songwriting and shared creative activity, and supporting connection to language, culture and community in an informal, youth-focused setting.
The Kimberley Song Muster is supported by the Australian Government’s Indigenous Languages and Arts Program and Minderoo Foundation.
Tura Artistic Director Tos Mahoney said support from Minderoo Foundation marks an important step in sustaining the program’s long-term work with communities.
“Sound FX has been developed over nearly a decade through close collaboration with communities in the Fitzroy Valley,” he said. “This support enables an important next stage of the work, allowing us to deepen those relationships while expanding opportunities for songwriting, language sharing and cultural exchange.”
Earlier this month, as part of a series of roundtables and planning sessions in Broome, partners, community members, artists and educators came together to share work, connect across organisations and explore how to support shared ambitions. These conversations will help inform future activity.
Further activity is planned throughout 2026, including additional residencies, school-based work and ongoing collaborations with partners.
