A songbook project in collaboration with Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa

Songs in Language for Children and Community

Tura, in partnership with Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ), worked with Martu women, Elders, and young people from the communities of Jigalong and Punmu to create and record children’s songs in Martu language.

Led by Elders and families, and supported by linguists, the project prioritised strong and accurate use of language. The songs are now being shared in homes, schools, and community settings, helping children learn Martu language through music, storytelling, and everyday experiences.

The end result was a Martu language songbook and a series of recordings, which have been shared with communities and schools to support language learning and the continuation of cultural knowledge for future generations.

Created by Martu, for Martu children and families, the songs reflect Country, animals, hunting, school, and everyday life.

This project has been made with partnership with the Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa Wantikajaku Jijikajaku (For Women and Children) Program, and Rawa Community School, Punmu.
