Tura’s production Mungangga Garlagula (Yarning by the Fire) by Mark Atkins and Erkki Veltheim will tour to Sydney, NSW and Narre Warren, VIC this winter following performances in WA and at the Canberra International Music Festival.
Presented as part of Sydney Opera House’s Music on Tubowgule program, Mungangga Garlagula will be performed in the Studio on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 June (matinee) 2026, before travelling to Bunjil Place in Narre Warren, Victoria on Saturday 4 July.
A collaboration in music, sound and storytelling, Mungangga Garlagula is a deeply human journey of homecoming told through spoken word, soundscape and music.
Wajarri for “yarning by the fire,” the work draws audiences into a nocturnal world of memories, echoes, spirits and dreams. Co-created and performed by Atkins on didgeridoo and Veltheim on viola and electronics, the production combines live performance with an immersive recorded soundscape created with Genevieve Lacey, Vanessa Tomlinson, Stephen Magnusson, Anthony Pateras and Scott Tinkler.
“The best stories are told around a campfire and I’m so proud to share my own alongside Erkki in a work that honours Country. It feels fitting to perform Mungangga Garlagula on Tubowgule, a place where mob has gathered for tens of thousands of years.” – Mark Atkins
A descendant of WA’s Yamatji people and of Irish/Australian heritage, Atkins is recognised internationally for his exceptional didgeridoo skills and storytelling. Veltheim is an Australian/Finnish composer and multi-disciplinary artist whose work spans live and electronic sound, theatre and improvisation.
The work has developed over time through Tura’s long-running Kimberley touring program, with Atkins and Veltheim collaborating over many years as members of The Narli Ensemble. The work continues to develop and grow with each performance as Mark and Erkki uncover further nuances in the quadrophonic sound bed and stories.
Tura Artistic Director Tos Mahoney said the work represents a significant artistic collaboration grounded in story, place and listening.
“Mungangga Garlagula brings together two remarkable artists whose collaboration has evolved over many years through Tura. It’s a powerful and deeply immersive work that continues to resonate strongly with audiences.”
