Music on Tubowgule: Mungangga Garlagula

A collaboration in music, sound and storytelling by Mark Atkins and Erkki Veltheim

A Tura Production

A collaboration in music, sound and storytelling by renowned musicians Mark Atkins and Erkki Veltheim, Mungangga Garlagula (Yarning by the Fire) is a deeply human story of homecoming, told through spoken word, soundscape and music.

Wajarri for “yarning by the fire,” Mungangga Garlagula invites you into a nocturnal world of memory, echo, spirit and dream. Anchored by the hypnotic storytelling of Atkins, one of the country’s leading virtuosos of the didgeridoo and shaped in collaboration with violist, composer and sound artist Erkki Veltheim, this theatrical work conjures Country through an immersive interplay of live performance and recorded sound.

The performance is accompanied by an immersive recorded soundscape featuring Genevieve Lacey (recorder), Vanessa Tomlinson (percussion), Stephen Magnusson (guitar), Anthony Pateras (piano and analogue synthesizers) and Scott Tinkler (trumpet), blending live and recorded elements.

Mark Atkins is a true iconoclast a living conduit between then and now and the place down the track we cannot yet see. A descendant of the Yamatji people, his music has taken him to concert halls around the world and countless stages in between.

Erkki Veltheim, whose practice spans contemporary classical, improvisation and experimental music, brings a distinctive voice through viola and electronics, expanding the work’s sonic and emotional range.
