A collaboration in music, sound and storytelling by Mark Atkins and Erkki Veltheim

A Tura Production

A collaboration in music, sound and storytelling by renowned musicians Mark Atkins and Erkki Veltheim, Mungangga Garlagula (Yarning by the Fire) is a roadmap to the shadowlands of the most ancient place on earth: Western Australia.

Like the great traditions of oral storytelling and music-making across cultures, Mungangga Garlagula is at once crafted and improvised, occurring both here and now in the performance space, and always, across the vastness of time and country. The immersive soundtrack, scored by Erkki Veltheim, was performed and created by Genevieve Lacey (recorders), Stephen Magnusson (guitar), Anthony Pateras (piano and analogue synthesizers), Scott Tinkler, (trumpet), and Vanessa Tomlinson (percussion).

Intimate and epic, playful and piercing, Mungangga Garlagula restores the experience of listening with the whole body. It draws us together with new attention on a deeply human journey of disorientation, reorientation and homecoming.

“This show richly deserves a wide reception within and beyond our borders as a contemplation of place and connection to Country.” Victoria Laurie (SeeSaw Magazine).
